Tanzania can truly claim to be the home of the Safari. The word Safari means Journey in Kiswahili (Swahili). And, we believe there is no better place to enjoy the enriching wildlife experience than Tanzania. The nature viewing experiences are widely regarded as the best in Africa. It is the best place to observe endless herds of Wildebeest and Zebras trekking across the plains on their annual migrations while being followed by predators like Lions, Cheetas, Leopards and Hyenas.
Serengeti is a Maasai word that means “an endless plain”. And that is certainly what if feels like when you arrive and look over the plain measuring 14,763 sq kilometres. The Serengeti has the most spectacular concentration of game animals found anywhere in the world – it is the symbol of Africa’s wildlife in many ways. The Serengeti contains all the big five animals (Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant, Rhino) and over 35 other species of other game animals. A splendid selection of bird life is also to be found in the park. The annual migration of wildlife adds to the uniqueness of the park and your experience there. The migration is a massive movement of large herds of animals usually in the months of December through April. Thousands upon thousands of Wildebeest and Zebras are seen moving across the central plains westwards and northwards to Masai Mara in Kenya and back in search of water and pastures. This phenomenon has been going on for millions of years. To watch this animal movement is a remarkable and inspiring sight that you will remember for the rest of your life.
Between Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti lies Olduvai Gorge - “Cradle of Mankind”. Under the direction of the famous Dr. Leakey, the gorge has yielded abundant fossil material dating back at least two million years and possibly much longer. Many pre-historic Elephants, Giant Horned Sheep and enormous Ostriches have been unearthed in this Stone Age site. In 1959 the remains of the Nutcracker Man or ‘Zinjanthropus Bosei’ whose skull is in the National Museamin Dar-es Salaam were discovered here as well.
Lake Manyara National Park covering an area of 325sq kilometres is one of the most beautiful places in all of Africa. The park has various characteristics that are quite different from any other park in the world. There are five distinct vegetation zones within the park including the ground water forest and the Maji Moto (hot sulphur spring) at the southern end of the park. The park is famous for its numerous Buffalo, Elephant, and lovely Flamingo, which in certain seasons form a serene background. You may also witness various lion prides which often take time out to recline on the limbs of the Acacia trees three to seven metres above the ground. A remarkable sight.
The Ngorongoro Crater is 610m deep and 20 kilometres in diameter and is the home to thousands of species including flamingos and other birds that stage spectacular displays for visitors. Ngorongoro Crater was an active volcano some eight million years ago, whose cone collapsed leaving a crater, or more properly a caldera. The crater rim is where the Lodges are situated at an altitude of 2286 meters in wooded mountain forest vegetations. Only 4WD vehicles can take visitors to the crater from the rim. It is a spectacular way to start your safari in the crater.
Covering an area of 2600sq the Tarangire National Park is famous for its dense wildlife population which is at its most spectacular between June and December. During this period, thousands of animals migrate from southern Maasailand to Tarangire River looking for water. Also Tarangire is a paradise for the bird watcher.
Described as a “little gem”, Arusha National Park consists of three spectacular features – The Momela lakes, Mt. Meru crater and the Ngurdoto crater. Altitude ranges from 1525m at Momella to nearly 4565m at the summit of Mt. Meru with an overall area of 137sq kilometres. On clear days, magnificent views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru can be seen from almost any part of the park. The park is famous for its birdlife both migrant and resident. And the handsome Black and White Colobus Monkeys which inhabit the green forest of ancient cedar and podocarpus. Other animals commonly seen in the park are Baboons, Elephants, Giraffes, Buffalo, Hippo, Hyena, Klipspringer, Warthog, Bush Pig, and Waterbuck. The movie thrillers, “Hatari” and “Sammy go south” were filmed in this enchanting wildlife sanctuary.
The Mikumi National Park is located 300km from Dar es Salaam. Because of its accessibility it is one of the more popular wildlife destinations in Tanzania. With its size of 3230 sq kilometres it offers a wide variety of wildlife. Main features of the Park are the Mikumi flood plain, with its open grassland that eventually merges with woodland covering the foothills of the Lugulu Mountains that border the park on two sides.
Baboon, Buffalo, Elephants, Hartebeests, Lion, Wildebeest, Zebra and the Greater Kudu are among the species that can bee seen here. Over 300 species of birds have been observed in this park as well. Some of which are Eurasian migrants who stay between October and April. Crocodiles, Monitor Lizards and Pythons are also resident here.
The Selous game reserve is the largest in Africa. This reserve represents an uninhabited area the size of Switzerland. If visitors are looking for Elephants, this is the place. It has the largest population of these giant and gentle mammals. It is a vast wilderness untamed by man. The Rufiji river system, the greatest in East Africa, which flows through the reserve, makes game viewing by boat cruising possible and it is the only park in the country where this can be done. Apart from Elephants, other species commonly seen are Lions, Wild Dogs, Impala, Giraffe, Eland, Baboon, Zebra and the Great Kudu. The river also attracts Crocodiles and Hippos. The park gets its name from the hunter explorer Frederick Courtney Selous, whose books about his exploits were best sellers in Victorian England.
Zanzibar is known throughout the world as the jewel of the Indian Ocean. It has a romantic and colourful history of seafarers and explorers spending time here along with with a history and dark stain of slavery. Once the trading center for the entire East Africa area, Zanzibar attracted Sumerians, Assyrians, Phoenicians, Arabs, Chinese and Malays. The great explorers, Burton, Speke, Livingstone, and Krapt continued their journeys from these shores as well. A walk through the narrow, twisting streets of the Stone Town plunges you into the past. The houses here are over 150 years old and constructed from the Island’s coral stones. Built by Arabs and Indian merchants in the nineteen century, this is the only functioning historical city in East Africa.
A spice tour is a specialty of Zanzibar and it involves a walk in the western and central regions of island through plantations, private gardens and forests. There are over 50 different spices and fruits like cinnamon, pepper, pimentos, ginger, tamarind, and coconut to sample and buy. The clear sandy beaches, swimming with Dolphins in the south coast at Kizimkazi, and the Red Colobus monkeys at the Jozani forest in the Central Zanzibar should not be missed. Snokerling and scuba diving on the North Coast (Nungwi) adds in to the beauty and adventure of Zanzibar.
The Maasai is one the most famous and interesting tribes in Africa. The Maasai are mostly found in Tanzania and Kenya. Although, can be found in other parts of the southern Sahara as well. Maasai are not from a Bantu speaking group of people, rather they reign from a Nilotic people of northern Sahara (Ethiopia). The Maasai are very rich in culture. They have been practising their style of life for hundreds of generations. The Maasai are traditionally nomadic pastoralists meaning they are animal keepers and have been moving from one place to the other with their animals in search of green pastures and water. The Maasai have not established a “King leadership” in their society. Instead the Maasai society has been able to encourage and establish a system called “the age set system”. In this system, age is what will determine the position and the responsibility of a Maasai in their society. Monduli Juu is about 50km from Arusha town. It is one of the homelands of the Maasai where visitors can observe them in their natural day-to-day lives. This area does not see as much tourism compared to Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. If you decide to visit, you will be considered a guest by the Maasai. With that, you can also invite the Maasai to your campsite “the Norcumat camp site” which in the Great Rift Valley escapement. They will entertain you with local dance performances. From the Norkumat camp, there is a beautiful view of Mt, Meru, Kilimanjaro and the Oldonyolengai “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language which, by the way, is also an active volcano. If you have time to walk down the escapement and hike on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, you may see Zebras, Giraffe, Ostriches and Antelopes.
These are the block of Mountain ranges laying about 300km in the north east of Tanzania near the Ocean and Tanga region. These mountains reach a height of 2700m. The Shambaa is the tribe found on these mountains and the Shambaa people have been farmers for many generations observing many traditions and values in their culture. Lushoto town is the Main town on the Usambara Mountains. The town rests at an altitude of 1500m. The walk from Mombo town, which is right at the base of the mountain, to Lushoto will also give you breathtaking views. The walk is about 25km and along the way enjoy views of the interlocking spurs with the waterfalls, as well as the Blue Monkeys. The weather in the Usambara Mountains is cool and temperate all year around. The climate helped the Germans to make Lushoto their capital during the colonial time. They called Lushoto ‘Wilhemstal’ (after the German Kaiser).
